TL;DR: your Linux options
- Whispek: a .deb for Ubuntu and Debian and an AppImage for other distros¹. Hold Left Ctrl + Left Alt + Space, talk, and clean text lands at your cursor. It's the only one of the three with .deb and AppImage packages for mainstream Linux distros (the three being Whispek, Wispr Flow and Superwhisper).
- Typeless: also has a Linux desktop app, installed from a .deb file, plus apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
- Superwhisper: its Linux build is distributed on GitHub as Omarchy packages (.tar.zst, for x86-64 and aarch64). Its website still lists Linux as coming soon.
- Wispr Flow: no Linux app. If you also use a Mac, a Windows PC or a phone, it works there.
Linux voice typing options at a glance
| App | Linux package | Other platforms | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whispek | x86_64 .deb (Ubuntu/Debian) and AppImage, version 0.1.16 (beta) | Windows; macOS 14.2+ (Apple Silicon and Intel, beta) | whispek.com/download/linux |
| Typeless | Linux desktop app as a .deb | macOS, Windows, iPhone, Android | typeless.com/downloads |
| Superwhisper | Omarchy packages (.tar.zst) for x86-64 and aarch64 on GitHub; website lists Linux as coming soon | macOS, Windows, iPhone, Android | GitHub: superwhisper-linux-releases |
| Wispr Flow | None: no native Linux app | macOS, Windows, iPhone, Android 13+ | wisprflow.ai/downloads |
Why Wispr Flow isn't an option on Linux
Wispr Flow's system requirements list Mac (macOS 12 or later), Windows 10 or 11 on x64, iPhone (iOS 18.3 or later) and Android 13 or newer. Linux, Chromebooks, virtual machines and remote desktops are listed as not supported, and the downloads page shows a "Vote to build for Linux" button instead of a download.
Its help center also covers dictating from Flow on Windows into WSL and terminal windows. That still needs Windows: there is no native Linux application.
What you get with Whispek on Linux
Hold Left Ctrl + Left Alt + Space, talk, let go. Your words land at the cursor with the "um"s and restarts gone and punctuation in place. It's up to 4x faster than typing.
Whispek Free gives you an allowance every 7 days, on Linux too. Pro removes the limit.
- Live transcript. Turn on Live transcription display and your words show above the capsule while you talk.
- Cleanup your way. Pick Formal, Casual or Very casual, write your own rule in Custom, or choose Original to keep every word.
- Voice translation. Press Left Ctrl + Left Alt + Y, speak, and get the translation at your cursor.
- Dictionary and Snippets. Add project names and terms like useEffect once, and save a sign-off you can drop in with a short phrase.
- History. Every result is saved on your computer, with the original text and switchable versions.
- Whispek Assistant. Select text, press Left Ctrl + Left Alt + A and ask about it.
Install Whispek on Ubuntu, Debian or another distro
- Download the .deb (Ubuntu, Debian) or the AppImage (other distributions) from the Linux download page.
- On Debian or Ubuntu, install the .deb with your package tool. On other distributions, make the AppImage executable and run it.
- Open Whispek and sign in with your email.
- Click into a text field, hold Left Ctrl + Left Alt + Space, talk, and let go.
¹ Whispek for Mac and Linux is in beta. The Linux packages are unsigned x86_64 builds.
X11 and Wayland
Voice input is Left Ctrl + Left Alt + Space, and the Assistant is Left Ctrl + Left Alt + A. On X11 you can hold the shortcut to talk, and you can change it to another combination of modifier keys plus one key. On Wayland, the shortcut goes through your desktop's global shortcuts portal, and Whispek shows the combination your desktop assigned. Whispek can't type into other apps on Wayland, so when your text is ready you get a Copy text button to paste it yourself, and it's saved in History.
When another option fits better
- You want a phone app too. Wispr Flow, Typeless and Superwhisper all have iPhone and Android apps; Whispek is desktop only.
- You need offline dictation. Superwhisper offers local voice models on Mac and Windows; Whispek always needs an internet connection.
- You're on ARM Linux. Whispek's Linux packages are x86_64 only; Superwhisper's Linux packages include aarch64.
- You run Omarchy. Superwhisper's Linux preview targets Omarchy, so it may fit your setup.
- Your team needs enterprise controls. Wispr Flow and Typeless offer enterprise plans; Whispek has no team or enterprise plan.
