Windows, Mac and Linux
How we compared
- Desktop platforms: which of Windows, macOS and Linux each app lists today.
- Where it works: one shortcut across apps, or only inside one coding tool.
- Coding-specific features: file tagging, editor awareness, prompt rewriting.
- Review before sending: can you check and fix the text before the agent acts on it?
- Vocabulary: a dictionary for repository, library and service names.
- Processing: cloud or on-device.
- Price: the entry paid plan from each public pricing page.

Wispr Flow: best if you want file tagging inside Cursor
Wispr Flow's help center says it can recognize variable names visible in Cursor, Windsurf and standard VS Code, and turn spoken file names into @-tags in Cursor and Windsurf AI chat panels, on Mac and Windows. Those features are included on all plans, according to the same page. Free covers 2,000 words a week on desktop; Pro is $15/user/month, or $12/user/month billed annually.
Choose it if: you live in Cursor or Windsurf and want voice-driven file tags.
Superwhisper: best for custom modes and on-device models
Superwhisper says it runs at the operating system level and works in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot Chat in VS Code, Windsurf, Xcode and JetBrains. It offers on-device models and custom modes, and says Super Mode reads what's on your screen to keep coding prompts technical. It runs on Mac and Windows 10/11. Its Windows guide lists coding agent integrations and the CLI as not yet available on Windows. Its Free plan includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, up to 2 modes without AI processing and custom vocabulary. New users get 3,000 words of Pro features. Pro costs $8.49/month, $84.99/year or $249.99 for a lifetime license.
Choose it if: you want local processing and like configuring modes.
Aqua Voice: a cloud option with dictionary and instructions
Aqua Voice runs on Mac and Windows. Its pricing page lists 1,000 free words, then Pro at $8/month billed annually ($10 month-to-month) with Custom Instructions and an expanded Custom Dictionary. Max ($24/month annually, $30 monthly) adds Realtime Mode to see words live and a "Send it" voice command.
Choose it if: you are on Mac or Windows and want live words on screen (Max).
Typeless: cross-desktop, including Linux
Typeless has desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux, plus iOS and Android apps. Its pricing page describes a personal dictionary and a different tone for each app; it does not describe coding-specific features. Free has limited words each week; Pro is $12/member/month billed yearly or $30 billed monthly.
Choose it if: you want per-app tone.
VoiceInk: one-time purchase for Apple Silicon Macs
VoiceInk is open source and transcribes on your Mac, according to its site, with optional cloud enhancement of the text. It needs an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14.4 or later. A licence is a one-time $25 for one Mac ($39 for two, $49 for three), or you can build it from source.
Choose it if: you only code on an Apple Silicon Mac and prefer to pay once.
Handy: free, open source, on every desktop
Handy is free and open source and transcribes on your computer, per its site and README. Press a shortcut, speak, and it pastes the text into the field you are typing in. It does not describe cleanup, prompt rewriting or coding features.
Choose it if: you want a free local tool and do not need extras.
Built-in voice: Claude Code /voice and Cursor
You may not need a separate app. Claude Code has /voice: hold Space to talk, or use tap mode, which submits the prompt when you tap again if the transcript has at least three words. Its docs say /voice needs a Claude.ai account sign-in and is not available with an Anthropic API key, Amazon Bedrock or other cloud providers. In Cursor's Agents Window, press and hold Ctrl+M to speak.
Use them if: you only ever talk to one tool. A system-wide app makes sense once you also write in a second coding tool, a browser chat, GitHub, Slack or email.
Whispek: one hotkey for every coding tool, on Windows, Mac and Linux
Whispek is voice typing for Windows, Mac and Linux. Click into Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code or a browser chat, hold the hotkey and describe what you want. Clean text lands in the box, and you hit Enter when it looks right.
- Same shortcut everywhere: Right Alt on Windows, Right Option on macOS, Left Ctrl + Left Alt + Space on Linux. Change the Voice input shortcut on the Home screen.
- See it while you talk: turn on Settings > Voice & translation > Live transcription display to show a live transcript above the capsule.
- Turn rambling into a prompt: run Create an AI prompt in Transforms, or write your own with New transform and Instructions. Choose Original in Style > Cleanup when you want exactly what you said, or Auto cleanup to tidy it.
- Keep names right: add useEffect, PostgreSQL or your repo names to Dictionary once and they're in your dictionary on every computer you sign in to, so Whispek writes them your way. Got a long list? More actions > Import terms.
- Reuse what works: save standing instructions as Snippets and find past prompts in History.
What it does not do: it does not tag files, read your editor or repository, run commands or submit prompts, and it needs an internet connection. If you want voice file tagging in Cursor, Wispr Flow documents that; if you need on-device processing, look at Superwhisper, VoiceInk or Handy.
Whispek is free every 7 days. Pro is unlimited for $8.25/month, billed yearly ($99), or $12 month to month. Prices exclude tax.
Which one should you pick?

Tips that work with any dictation app
- Say the goal first, then the context, the constraints and how to check the result.
- Paste exact code, paths, errors and logs instead of reading them out.
- Read the prompt once before you press Enter, especially names, numbers and every "don't".
- For terminal agents like Claude Code and Codex CLI, dictate into a notes field or chat box, review, then paste into the prompt.
