Superwhisper: offline power and deep customization
Superwhisper offers local processing. Its Free plan includes local Whisper models, unlimited dictation and up to 2 modes without AI processing. Superwhisper fits if you need offline dictation.
What it offers
- Offline dictation. Neither Wispr Flow nor Whispek can do this.
- Customization. Pro adds AI modes (Super, Mail and others), context awareness, custom modes with your own system prompts, a choice of cloud models, and bring-your-own API keys.
- More than dictation. Pro includes file transcription, realtime transcription, system audio recording and speaker separation.
- Price. Pro is $8.49/month, $84.99/year or $249.99 for a lifetime license.
Things to know
Local models need decent hardware. Superwhisper's own FAQ says offline models "only run really well on Apple Silicon macs", and Intel Macs work best with cloud models. On Windows, some local models need Vulkan GPU support, and Windows ARM can't run all of them.
Superwhisper's Windows docs list features that aren't on Windows yet, including its coding agent integrations (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and others) and the CLI.
AI cleanup is a Pro feature. Free modes do no AI processing.
Wispr Flow doesn't support Linux. Superwhisper's Linux build is distributed on GitHub as Omarchy packages (its website still lists Linux as coming soon). Whispek ships a .deb and an AppImage for mainstream distributions like Ubuntu and Debian.
Wispr Flow: polished, cross-device, team-ready
Wispr Flow is cloud-based dictation designed to need very little setup. You hold a shortcut, speak, release, and the cleaned-up text lands in the field you're typing in. It removes filler words, adds punctuation, formats lists and handles spoken self-corrections.
What it offers
- Ease of use across devices. It's on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and your dictionary and snippets carry over between them.
- Coding editors. Wispr's help center documents variable recognition in Cursor, Windsurf and standard VS Code, and file tagging in Cursor and Windsurf AI chat panels, on Mac and Windows. Wispr Flow fits if you want to tag files by voice.
- Meetings. Wispr Notetaker records meetings on Mac and Windows without a bot joining the call. Free accounts get a weekly meeting limit.
- Teams and compliance. Shared dictionaries, SSO on Growth, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and HIPAA-ready dictation with a signed BAA on eligible plans.
- Editing by voice. Command Mode lets you select text and say what to change. It's experimental, off by default, and needs a paid plan or trial.
Things to know
It's cloud only. Its help center says an internet connection is required for transcription.
The free plan includes 2,000 words every week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile.
Pro costs $15/user/mo, or $12/user/mo billed annually ($144/year).
Desktop dictation inserts the finished text after you stop speaking. It doesn't show a live transcript as you speak.
Wispr Flow doesn't support Linux. Superwhisper's Linux build is distributed on GitHub as Omarchy packages (its website still lists Linux as coming soon). Whispek ships a .deb and an AppImage for mainstream distributions like Ubuntu and Debian.
Whispek: one dictation app for every desktop you use
Whispek runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. Press a shortcut (Right Alt on Windows, Right Option on Mac, Left Ctrl + Left Alt + Space on Linux), speak, and clean text lands in the app you're working in.
Why Whispek
- Wispr Flow doesn't support Linux. Superwhisper's Linux build is distributed on GitHub as Omarchy packages (its website still lists Linux as coming soon). Whispek ships a .deb and an AppImage for mainstream distributions like Ubuntu and Debian.
- Same account, same Dictionary, every desktop. Your Dictionary is linked to your account, so names, product terms and library names follow you when you switch computers or operating systems.
- AI cleanup is in the free plan. "Um", "uh" and restarts just disappear, and punctuation is fixed.
- Works in almost any app: email, Slack, Notion, Word, browser AI chats and coding agents.
- Whispek Assistant built in. Ask by voice or text, attach selected text or ask for a rewrite, in its own conversation, separate from dictation.
- Made for prompting. Talk through a task for Cursor, Claude Code or Codex CLI: the context, the goal, what must not change. In an editor's chat box, Whispek inserts the text; in a terminal, you review and paste. More in voice dictation for developers.
Whispek runs in the cloud, so there's no offline mode or mobile app. Superwhisper fits if you need offline dictation; Superwhisper and Wispr Flow have mobile apps.
¹ Whispek for Mac (beta) runs on Apple Silicon and Intel with macOS 14.2+; the build isn't notarized yet, so expect a Gatekeeper prompt the first time you open it. Whispek for Linux (beta) ships as .deb and AppImage and is not yet fully tested on Wayland.
