Free dictation software

Choose free voice typing by the work you need done.

A free download, a free trial and a free plan are different offers. Start with where you want to write, whether you need installation or sign-in, and what happens after you use the allowance.

Three meanings of “free”

Free download tells you the installer costs nothing; it does not tell you whether processing is included. A free trial may expire or temporarily include paid features. A free plan can remain available while limiting usage, features or both.

Whispek Free includes the core features with recurring weekly usage. Plus and Pro increase allowance. Before choosing any tool, check its current plan page for recurring limits and any temporary trial terms.

Match the tool to your writing surface

These are different workflows, not an accuracy ranking. This guide does not establish that one tool is faster or more accurate than the others.

Start with built-in Windows dictation when it fits

Focus a text field and press Win+H. Microsoft documents microphone and internet requirements, supported languages and voice typing settings. If your job is simply to dictate into a field, start by checking whether this built-in workflow meets it.

Google Docs also documents voice typing within the editor. That is an editor-specific writing workflow, rather than a separate desktop voice typing app. Check its current browser and language guidance.

Use a browser notepad when installation is the obstacle

SpeechTexter describes its service as free multilingual speech to text, and provides a browser-based dictation notepad. Speechnotes offers a free dictation notepad and lists recording transcription separately. Their official sites explain supported browsers and the available tools.

If you need to convert an existing recording, look for file transcription explicitly. A free microphone dictation service does not necessarily include free recording uploads or meeting transcription.

Use Whispek Free for a desktop writing workflow

Choose Whispek when you want shortcut-based microphone dictation, text cleanup, a personal dictionary, local history and a separate AI assistant on Windows. All are core features shared by Free, Plus and Pro.

The free allowance refreshes weekly. Check remaining use and the next refresh in your account. Recognition, cleanup and assistant answers require an internet connection. Whispek is not a browser-only recorder, an offline speech model or a file-upload transcription service.

Check limits before you settle on a tool

Check five things: included features, whether usage renews, what consumes allowance, what happens at the limit and whether the processing suits your data requirements. Also distinguish an ongoing free plan from temporary access to paid features.

If you need offline recognition, choose a tool that explicitly documents it and inspect any optional cloud cleanup separately. If you need more usage on Whispek, compare Plus and Pro with your actual writing volume.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A few things worth knowing.

Visit the help center
What is the best free dictation software for Windows?

The right choice depends on your workflow. Consider Windows voice typing for a built-in option, a browser dictation notepad for web writing, or Whispek Free for its desktop writing tools and weekly allowance. No independent accuracy ranking is claimed here.

Does free voice typing mean unlimited use?

No. Check whether free refers to a download, a time-limited trial or a plan with recurring allowance. Whispek Free includes core features with weekly limits.

Can I use free speech to text online?

Browser dictation notepads are available from services such as SpeechTexter and Speechnotes. Whispek instead requires its Windows desktop app and uses cloud processing after sign-in.

Does a free dictation app also transcribe uploaded audio?

Not necessarily. Microphone input, uploaded recording transcription and meeting notes are different capabilities. Check the exact task and price on the provider’s site.
